More Than I Expected
A Day 25 devotional on trusting God beyond guarded prayers and reduced expectations.
Today's Reflection
Mary had learned, over time, to lower her expectations.
It happened quietly, after a series of consistent disappointments she never really talked about. Prayers that once carried hope began to feel heavy. Doors she believed would open stayed shut. And somewhere along the way, she adjusted, not her faith in God, but her expectations of what He would do for her.
As the Bible says, "hope deferred makes the heart sick." That is exactly what happened to Mary.
So she began to pray differently.
"God, just give me something small... a job, anything. At least I will have something to do. At least I will get by."
It sounded humble, but underneath it was weariness, a quiet attempt to protect her heart from hoping too much again.
Mary was not asking for purpose, but for survival. Not fulfillment, just something to fill the days.
But God had not reduced His plans to match her pain.
While she was asking for something small, He was already at work beyond what she could see. Opportunities she had not imagined. Openings that did not look like the ones she had lost. A path that was not built on "just getting by," but on purpose, growth, and restoration.
Because God does not answer to the level of our expectation. He answers from the fullness of who He is.
And He can do immeasurably more.
More than Mary asked for. More than she allowed herself to imagine again.
There is a tenderness in this, God meeting us even in our small prayers, yet not leaving us there.
Sometimes we come to Him like Mary, with careful words and guarded hope. But His response is not confined to our caution. His goodness is not reduced by our fear.
And in His own way, He begins to stretch what we thought was all we could expect.
Prayer
Lord, You see the places where disappointment has shaped how I come to You. You see the quiet ways I have lowered my expectations. Help me to trust You again, not just with what feels safe, but with what feels uncertain. Remind me that You can do more than I ask or imagine. Gently expand my faith, and teach me to receive all that You have prepared for me. Amen.
