Give Thanks in All Circumstances
A Day 1 devotional on gratitude, trust, and the goodness of God even in painful or uncertain seasons.
Today's Reflection
Have you ever gone through something really painful, only to have someone tell you to give thanks to God anyway?
If I’m being honest, it used to feel unfair to me. Like why should I be grateful when I don’t even like what’s happening? There was a time I genuinely didn’t understand it, especially when things weren’t going the way I wanted.
But as I started growing in my faith, something began to shift.
I realized that giving thanks isn’t about pretending everything is okay. It’s about recognizing that God is still good, even when life doesn’t feel good.
Growing up in church, we used to say, “God is good” and respond “all the time.” I said it, but I didn’t fully understand it. It was just something we did. But now, it means something deeper.
Scripture reminds us in Psalm 136:1: “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures forever.”
That’s the conclusion we have to come to in our walk with God: God is always good. Not sometimes. Not only when things make sense. Always.
So even in the middle of uncertainty, we can choose gratitude not because the situation is good, but because He is.
Let this truth anchor your heart. Hold on to it, especially on the days it’s hardest to believe.
Prayer
Lord, help me to trust in Your goodness, even when I don’t understand what I’m going through. Teach me to give thanks, not because everything is perfect, but because You are always good. Anchor my heart in this truth. Amen.
